Hi, guys! Happy Deepavali to all of you who are celebrating! This week, let’s explore beautiful hills and sunsets in Sumba, Indonesia πππΈ
So, where is Sumba? It’s an island in East Nusa Tenggara, just a 1.5-hour flight from Bali!
If you love beaches, waterfalls, and sunsets, you’ll love this underrated destination because you’ll be able to enjoy them as if you were on a private island πππ
Seriously, this island is very quiet and calm because there aren’t many tourists, thanks to its mini airport which caters to only 3 flights/day.
For content creators, you can shoot videos and re-take videos as many times as you want, without disruption… well, maybe sometimes there are cows or horses pass by πππ
There aren’t many things I can share with you about Sumba, Indonesia besides its beautiful nature and unique culture. I hope you enjoy this photo gallery and are inspired to travel to this island β¨β¨β¨
Photoshooting on Palindi Piarakuku Hills, Sumba
Okay, there are so many hills and savannas in Sumba they almost look the same. However, when you’re on this island, you won’t get bored exploring them!
This place is called Palindi Piarakuku Hills in Sumba, Indonesia.
Me, Karim (my tour guide cum photographer), and Hermand (my driver) had to leave the hotel a bit early so we could reach there before the sun got hotter.
Actually, I was in Sumba in September 2024, the last month of the rainy season. Still, the sun was scorching hot, even at 9 or 10 am! Make sure you apply sunblock, guys!
Our car couldn’t reach the top of the hills, so we had to walk around 700 meters to enjoy the view.
Double luck, there was nobody when we reached there, so I had an uninterrupted photoshoot. Could you imagine how long I should wait under the hot sun if the hills were crowded? πππ

Afterward, we ran as fast as we could to the car because it was so hot βοΈβοΈβοΈLuckily, the AC in the car worked very well!
Alright, where should we go next? Let’s visit Puru Kambera Savanna to see some horses!

The Local Sakura Trees and Puru Kambera Savanna, Sumba
On the way to Puru Kambera Savanna, we passed by some Sumba Sakura trees. Well, they weren’t Sakura flowers, but they look similar so the locals call them “Sumba Sakura” πΈπΈπΈ
By the way, we have similar ‘Sakura’ trees in Malaysia too, hehe! So, we decided to stop for a while to take some photos.
I thought the Sakura trees in Sumba had withered as it was the dry season. That’s why the photos of the hills and savannas you see in this blog post were yellow.
As we drove, the road was super empty I said to myself if I were to get lost in Sumba, especially in this kind of area, it would be dangerous because there were very few cars passing by. Plus, it’s super hot!
I guess by this time you can also feel the heat, hehe! π₯΅π΅βοΈNext, let’s enjoy the sunsets at some popular places in Sumba!

The Wanderlust’s Sunset Journey on Wairinding Hills, Sumba
To capture the perfect moment, we reached Wairinding Hills earlier. We took some photos and explored the hills, waiting for the sky to turn orange.
Some children exchanged stories passionately and some couples wandered the hills, waiting for the sunset.
I really like my sunset photos that were taken on Wairinding Hills, Sumba because… they truly portray my wanderlust heart!
Of course, before the trip, I googled the destinations and decided which clothes to wear so I would look good in the photos, hehe…
However, I didn’t know that the sunset photos taken on Wairinding Hills + my British India “Adventurer” top + backpack + hat + the magnificent, winding road will lead to THESE:

Aaaah, thank you so much, Mother Nature! Also Karim, my tour guide, for taking the photos!
After the photoshoot, we sat down and were immersed in the moment until the sun completely set. Travelling to Sumba, Indonesia reminded me to cherish nature πππΏπ

Sunset Picnic on Hiliwuku Hills, Sumba
There’s nothing much to write about Hiliwuku Hills in Sumba, Indonesia. I went there on the last day of the trip, which was the most relaxing day!
I was supposed to go to Waimarang Waterfall but I skipped it because the road was very tough and at some point, I would have to go down by clinging to a tree’s root ππΏπ #tarzanmodeon
Since Hiliwuku Hills looks similar to other hills in Sumba, I decided to have a picnic theme for the photoshoot. Luckily I brought a red pashmina with me.
Karim asked me to borrow some books from the receptionist as properties, and voila! When the time was right, we took some nice photosπ§‘π§‘π§‘

Sunset at Walakiri Beach, the Hottest Destination in Sumba
Alright guys, finally, we arrived at our last destination of the blog: Walakiri Beach, Sumba! This is the hottest destination for sunset photography in Sumba.
Walakiri Beach is very near to Puru Kambera Beach, Sumba. However, only some locals (mainly tour guides) know about its existence.
Puru Kambera beach was very clean, quiet, and beautiful, like this:
When the sun started to set, Karim led the way to Walakiri Beach. I took off my hiking sandals to avoid getting tangled with the seaweed because I had to go into the water.
Don’t worry guys, the water wasn’t deep, it was a bit cold and the sand was soft. I liked walking on the seaweed bed, it was very soft and calming πππ
If you want to take great sunset photos at Walakiri Beach, make sure you come at the right time. Once the sun has completely set, the photos won’t be nice anymore!
Of course, you still need to edit the photos to make them look interesting, hehe! πΈπΈπΈ
Okay, that’s the end of our trip! So far we’ve visitted Palindi Piarakuku Hills, Puru Kambera Savanna, Wairinding Hills, Hiliwuku Hills, and Walakiri Beach in Sumba, Indonesia.
I hope you enjoy the picturesque hills, savannas, and sunsets in Sumba. So, when are you going to Sumba? ππΈπ
