Hi friends!! It was only 2 weeks ago I dreamed about travelling and now Langkawi is gonna be opened for domestic tourists on 16 September 2021.
It’s a very good sign and a ray of hope for international travelers to return next year. So… hang on! ???
Meanwhile, I’m still homesick so this week I decided to share about my Bandung trip back in 2012.
Honestly, I travelled to Bandung, Indonesia mainly for wisata kuliner aka food hunting, but there are still many places that you shouldn’t miss such as Kawah Putih (the White Crater) and Tangkuban Perahu.
Since it was a short trip and done many years ago, this blog post doesn’t cover enough interesting places or finger-lickin’ foods in Bandung.
But I hope reading it makes you feel happy and intrigued to visit Bandung, Indonesia in the future.
Kawah Putih / The White Crater, Bandung
Is it possible to have a one-day trip in Bandung? Yes, it is, but it’s probably too rushing. One thing is for sure, you need to rent a car and driver as it would help you to save time and energy.
The distance between Bandung and Kawah Putih is around 44km, so it’s gonna be approx. 2 hour’s drive (depending on the traffic).
You can park your car at the main car park, near the entrance. If hiking 5km to reach the crater sounds too much, just board the mini-shuttle bus โ
Looking back, Kawah Putih or The White Crater in Bandung reminds me of Pamukkale, Turkey. However, Pamukkale is in layers while The White Crater is a lake.
The Legend of Tangkuban Perahu (Overturned Boat)
I heard about the legend of Tangkuban Perahu when I was a child. Upon writing this blog, I googled about it to refresh my memory and my jaws dropped.
It’s… very sad and dramatic.
Once upon a summer, a wild boar was walking in a forest and she felt thirsty. She unknowingly drank the pee of King Sungging Perbangkara, a mighty magician.
Afterward, it became pregnant and gave birth to a baby girl ๐คฏ
The King heard about the news and looked for the child in the forest, named her Dayang Sumbi then both returned to the kingdom.
Dayang Sumbi grew up to be a very beautiful woman, many princes and kings wanted to marry her. However, she carefully refused the proposals.
Alas, wars between kingdoms broke out because they still wanted to marry her.
Dayang Sumbi felt very sad and decided to exile herself, accompanied by a male dog, called Tumang.
One day while weaving, she felt lazy to pick up a fallen tool and said, “If a man helped me to pick up the tool, I’ll be his wife. If it’s a woman, she’ll be my sister.”
But then, it was her dog, Tumang, who picked up the tool ๐ฑ
Fortunately, the dog was an incarnation of a god, who was cursed to be an animal and sent to the earth. Both of them had a son named Sangkuriang ๐คฏ
A few years later, Sangkuriang went hunting with Tumang. That day, his mother was craving for a deer’s heart. He asked Tumang to hunt the deer, but surprisingly, the dog kept refusing.
Sangkuriang was angry and, without knowing that the dog was his father, killed the dog instead and took its heart.
When Dayang Sumbi knew that she had eaten her own husband’s heart, she went manic and hit Sangkuriang’s head until it bled.
Sangkuriang was upset, he felt that his mother loved the dog more than him so he left the house.

Dayang Sumbi was devastated and prayed to the gods for forgiveness. The gods forgave her and blessed her with eternal beauty.
Many years passed by and she didn’t age at all. Meanwhile, Sangkuriang grew up to be a powerful magician and charming man. Without realizing it, his adventure took him back to his birthplace.
Both of them met, fell in love and planned to get married ๐คฏ One day, Dayang Sumbi saw the wound on Sangkuriang’s head and realized that he was her son.
She told him the truth but he refused to believe it, seeing that she didn’t age at all.
Therefore, she gave him 2 conditions in order to marry her: make a dam surrounding the Citarum River in order to create a lake.
Then, there must be a huge boat inside the lake – both to be done before sunrise.
The powerful Sangkuriang called upon spirits to help him with the task. When Dayang Sumbi saw that her son almost succeed, she forced the roosters to crow.
Hearing the crow thinking the sun has risen, the spirits felt scared and left the task unfinished.
Upon knowing that Dayang Sumbi played a trick on him, Sangkuriang was furious and kicked the huge boat. It fell overturned and then turn into a mountain, called the Tangkuban Perahu Mountain.
